Public Strike
Rants
A concerned citizen
The government that we voted into power today doesnt see the need to give workers what they want, whilst in 3 weeks ago, he was pleadin with citizens not to distrupt the world cup and now citizens are pleading with him for money but he cant supply it. And the sad part is that it's only the workin class society that is on strike and the affected people are also the working class and thier children, I say this becuase teachers on strike are of the public sector and so that means their own children are not studing because they are the one in public schools and then how do we expect them to get 38 points for admission at universities?

My experience with the SAPS Dog Unit
Raves
riaan
The SAPS Dog UnitI have worked with the Port Elizabeth Dog Unit as a photojournalist for the last 8 months. I partnered several individual officers and their dogs in their patrol vehicles – this involved wearing a bulletproof vest, racing to ‘crimes in progress’ at high speed, attending crime scenes, chasing after suspects and witnessing several arrests.

Water Crisis
Rants
Tanya Pienaar
with our water crisis why have we not done cloud seeding when this is so huge in the USA? article from website:

Cloud seeding, a form of weather modification, is the attempt to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei, which alter the microphysical processes within the cloud. The usual intent is to increase precipitation (rain or snow), but hail and fog suppression are also widely practiced in airports erpenes are released by trees more actively during warmer weather, acting as a natural form of cloud seeding. The clouds reflect sunlight, allowing the forest to regulate its temperature

Which area to buy in?
Frequently Asked Questions
Claire
Hi, just curious about which area to buy in. We have found a beautiful property in Richmond Hill in Elliot street. I know that its close to central but is it really that dangerous and would it be a bad investment? My sister is going to uni there so the idea is to have her and a friend move into the house as we're based in Tzaneen (Limpopo). Or on the other hand my ex has a house in Overbaakens which he wants me to buy. Is Overbaakens on a bad area to buy in? Which is situated in a better area and safer and has the best investment potential.

More PE unfriendlyness?
Rants
Anne-Marie
Early December our family travelled through the "friendly city", what's that???

We were heading to Humewood beach in our Kombi and was clearly holiday visitors with our "L" registration number.

We and 2 other cars (GP and FS number plates) were stopped by traffic officers set up clearly there for the holiday visitors. Only my husbands drivers licence were asked with the clear intention to arrest him for outstanding fines, as his and the other drivers's licence cards were taken to a vehicle to be checked.

Many Happy Memories
Raves
Anonymous
I grew up in Port Elizabeth, many happy memories of the places that my friends, brothers and myself enjoyed. As I left Port Elizabeth with my family to settle in England in 1969.Places like the jetty and the Baakens River where we spend many a happy day after school and on school holidays.I still bear the scar on my foot ha ha .We used to walk to Kings Beach or hitch a lift, I believe Port Elizabeth has changed to what I know it to be, from my sisters and brother who have been back.I would not change my momories for any thing.

Business in PE?
Frequently Asked Questions
AJ
I am an expatriate Indian living in durban and due to the "economic downturn" am thinking of entering fabric retail business and shift to PE. I have been reading the FAQ, Raves & rants on this website and the general feeling that comes is that PE is a freindly city but the people of PE ?? & donot like to mix beyond their own estd circle of friends(very contradictory), Crime is rampant as in Durbs or Jhb, but then it depends on individulas on how they would like to acclitamise to the new surroundings. I would like to ask a few questions and if anybody can answer these and help me, it will be highly appreciated.

Quad bike menace
Rants
Roel
Yesterday 20/7 fantastic beach weather and off we went to enjoy ourselves and the dog on Pati. Parked as usual next to Recife Rifle range. Astonished to find that there were tracks of quad bikes having gone down the steep dune and all over the beach to Pati and also into the usual Oystercatcher nesting sites in the high dunes.

More alarming was our return to the car and found the kombi had been broken into and side windows on both sides smashed. All 3 cars parked then had been broken into. One was a local's first visit to this beach and the other a couple from Kimberley's first visit. This may sadly be their last. Is there no respect for someone else's property and nature anymore? What is one to do now; stay home and leave the beach to motorbikes?
