Port Elizabeth Beach

Free and easy access, ample parking, clean and incredibly beautiful. No, it is not a new shopping complex you didn't know about. I am talking about Port Elizabeth’s beaches. They are absolutely stunning and as a whole, on par with anything from Belize to Phuket – you can ask those who have been to these exotic destinations (and I have). And the beauty of it all is, they are right here:  Blue Water Bay, St Georges, Kings Beach, Hoby, Pollock and Sardinia Bay – where else can you find ONE destination with so many stunning beaches?!

Port Elizabeth Beaches are the best in the countryWhat I can't understand is why so few PE folk are making optimum use of what we have as a natural resource. Think of the poor ‘Vaalies’ that travel here in December. Having saved up their money throughout the year to have a slice of the life that we have all year long. Can you imagine the traffic, crowds, money and  traveling time they have to endure to experience a watered down outdoor adventure.

Maybe PE locals lack that ‘beach culture.’ In Durban, Plett, Clifton and to some extent J-bay, beach life is more part of the majority’s common identity -  socialising on the beach is a regular phenomenon amongst teenagers and families.

Ideal fishing spots along Port Elizabeth's coastlineThe interesting thing about PE is that it is the young people, students and the like, that are lacking in this outdoor activity. Except for the surfers and boogie boarders it is more the older folk that are getting their feet wet and full of sand. It seems that ‘the new generation’ are more attracted to the watering holes along the beachfront than the proverbial ‘sea, sun and surf.’ Is our beach culture limited to the wearing of the popular and neigbourly Billabong designer wear only?

Get out there – life is free – and so are Port Elizabeth’s beautiful beaches!

Agree with the great beaches but what about the la - Selwyn   2008-01-10 16:45:13
I must agree that we have fantastic beaches and sometimes wonder why PE folk don't use them more.
The big negative though is the lack of parking at the pier area.Surely the metro should look at extending the parking area to beyond where the boats are taken onto the beach.I'm sure this keeps people away.
